RESP 2995 - Clinical Practicum V

5.5 Credits

The student is assigned 16.5 hours per week to clinical practice in affiliated hospitals and healthcare agencies. This clinical practicum is designed to provide the student with clinical exposure and opportunities to gain skills in a variety of areas, including experiences in sleep lab studies, pulmonary rehabilitation, HBO, pediatrics and neonatal respiratory care, and home healthcare.

Course Objectives

Recall & demonstrate proficiency with the PAC’s and Cognitive Assessments listed in the course outline for Clinical Practicum I - RESP 1991, Clinical Practicum II - RESP 1992, Clinical Practicum III - RESP 1993, and Clinical Practicum IV - RESP 2994
Explain the theory, as well as demonstrate the ability to perform the following:
1. Summarize the importance of respiratory care in the home. Cognitive Assessment #22
2. Routine neonatal/pediatric ventilator checks. Cognitive Assessment #23
3. Neonatal/pediatric ventilator initiation. Cognitive Assessment #24
4. Discuss the importance of the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therap. Cognitive Assessment #25
5. Discuss the importance of pulmonary rehabilitation in the care of patients with cardiopulmonary disease. Cognitive Assessment #26
6. Survey and analyze sleep testing in a sleep lab environment. Cognitive Assessment #27

3. Demonstrate the methods for the safe handling of clean and contaminated patient care equipment and supplies.

4. Student exhibits courteous and pleasant demeanor, shows consideration, respect, honesty, and integrity in the clinical setting, while recognizing social and cultural diversity.

5. Demonstrates the ability to gather and organize in written, verbal, and electronic forms, information concerning a patient’s diagnosis, disease process, and treatment in an ethical and private manner.

6. Apply good clinical judgement to include organization, efficiency, safety, and confidence in the clinical setting.

7. Demonstrate the ability to appropriately apply HIPAA regulations.

8. Demonstrates the values of work habits, dependability, and reliability in a clinical setting.
