Student Services



It is the role of Student Services to support the academic mission by providing a comprehensive range of services designed to facilitate student engagement with the College and success in the classroom.

These services include, but are not limited to, advising, counseling, services to students with disabilities, testing services, career services, and military and veteran student services. Library and Learning and Tutoring services are offered at the Elkhorn Valley, Fort and Omaha Campuses. MCC’s myHub.mccneb.edu portal provides students with an online way to learn about events, services and programs, join organizations, volunteer, and showcase their experiences in their personalized involvement record. 

Student Conduct

The purpose of the Student Code of Conduct is to define the general standard of conduct expected of students, provide examples of conduct that may be subject to disciplinary action by the College, provide examples of disciplinary measures that may be imposed, and set out the process and procedures that the College will follow when an allegation of academic and non-academic misconduct is made. Students are expected to be aware of, and to conduct themselves in accordance with this Code. Any conduct on the part of a student that has, or might reasonably be seen to have an adverse effect on the integrity or the proper functioning of the College, or the health, safety, rights, or property of the College or its members and visitors, is subject to discipline under this Code.

Academic Support

Academic Advising

The Success Navigator (SN) provides individualized guidance to new students, assisting them through the complexities of the College environment. They assist with connecting students to services and resources, including career exploration, and developing their educational plan. Success Navigators are committed to onboarding students to ensure a “Smart Start”. Success Navigators work with students until they have earned 30 credits.


Academic advisors assist students by developing an educational plan, promoting successful student practices, and providing general direction to support student academic and career goals. Advisors connect students to important college resources and provide information about MCC’s academic programs, services, policies, and procedures. Academic Advisors work with students to completion of their program of study.

Advocacy Counseling

Advocacy Counselors provide support and intervention when challenging circumstances or a major life event impacts academics or personal life. Counselors take a holistic approach to help you identify actions you can take to create positive change. They provide referrals to MCC partners and community agencies for services such as interpersonal counseling, financial assistance and housing. Services are free, private and focused on supporting your welfare on-and-off-campus.

Advocacy counselors also work with students returning to the College following academic suspension or dismissal. The advocacy counselors provide confidential assistance, advocacy, support, and consultation on behalf of individuals of gender and/or relationship violence on the campus including victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, harassment, and/or stalking. Advocacy includes assistance in coordinating services with local agencies on behalf of the subject in all areas, including student services, the local campus police department, and other services as needed. Advocacy counselors are available in the Student Services offices at the Elkhorn Valley, Fort Omaha, and the South Omaha campuses. Academic Support Services & Tutoring

The Learning and Tutoring Center (LTC) provides free tutoring, academic assistance, academic coaching services, a supportive study environment, and access to technology to enhance enrolled students’ learning success. Staff can assist with study strategies, basic skills, Microsoft Office programs, and online college systems. Technological resources include computers, internet, printing, scanning, and specialized software.

Subject-specific LTC tutors help students understand concepts and apply study strategies in high-challenge courses such as sciences, information technology, and accounting. Just drop in during scheduled hours to get in-person tutoring help for your class. Online, appointments are also available. For in-person LTC assistance, visit the Learning Commons at the Fort Omaha Campus, the Academic Support Commons at the Elkhorn Valley Campus, or the Learning and Tutoring Center at the South Omaha Campus. Math Centers

The Math Centers provide free, drop-in assistance for math courses and math-related topics at each main MCC location and online in the Online Academic Support Center. Online appointments can be scheduled in advance in AccuCampus at https://apps.mccneb.edu/AccuCampus. Online Academic Support Center

The Online Academic Support Center provides tutoring and other support services from the LTC, Math Center, and Writing Center. It is open days, evenings, and weekends. Use your MCC username and password to login to AccuCampus at https://apps.mccneb.edu/AccuCampus. On the AccuCampus landing page, you can check tutoring schedules for all locations, set an online appointment, attend an appointment or drop in for help via Zoom during scheduled hours. Online assistance is available to all enrolled MCC students, whether they attend classes virtually or in-person. Writing Centers

MCC Writing Centers provide professional writing assistance, workshops, and services to help students, staff, and faculty realize the power of the written word. It is a place where writers invite other writers to dialogue about writing at all stages of the process from brainstorming to editing. Libraries

The MCC Libraries provide research materials and instruction in support of the College’s curriculum. Staff members are available to assist students with research assignments, navigating databases, interlibrary loans, Canvas, MS Office software, and PaperCut.

Current students, faculty, and staff can utilize MCC Libraries’ extensive web resources on or off campus. Visit www.mccneb.edu/library for access to our collection of curated research guides and over 60 research databases containing eBooks, streaming videos, journals, magazines, newspapers, encyclopedias, and more.

The MCC Libraries in the Elkhorn Valley Academic Support Commons and the South Omaha Campus Connector Building house print books, DVDs, journals, magazines, and newspapers. At the Fort Omaha Campus, two locations - the Fort Omaha Digital Express in Building 10 and the Fort Omaha Learning Commons in Building 23 - provide library resources, in-person library services, and immediate access to select books and periodicals. All three campus locations offer course reserve materials and serve as pickup points for material requested from other MCC locations and other libraries. Students, faculty, and staff with current MCC identification are also welcome to use the City of La Vista Public Library at the Sarpy Center.

Other resources available to students include:

  • online assistance via chat and Ask a Librarian
  • computers equipped with internet access as well as Microsoft Office products (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher)

  • reciprocal borrowing agreements with the Omaha Public Libraries, the City of La Vista Public Library, and other college libraries in Nebraska

Bookstores

The College contracts with Follett Higher Education Group to manage and operate the bookstores. The bookstores located at the Elkhorn Valley, Fort Omaha, and South Omaha campuses are open throughout the quarter. Hours are prominently posted at each store and are extended during peak times each quarter.

Campus Dining

Campus dining is available, while classes are in session, at the South Omaha Campus (connector building), the Fort Omaha Campus (Building 10), and the Elkhorn Valley Campus. 

Hours of operation and variety of beverages, snacks, sandwiches, and hot items may vary by location.

The Sage Student Bistro, located at the Fort Omaha Campus in the Institute for the Culinary Arts (Building 22), offers a teaching and learning experience for culinary arts students. Career Experience

The mission of MCC Career Experiences is to bridge the education to employment gap through career development and provide experiential employment opportunities to students through interactive engagement, networking, and job readiness activities.

MCC Career Experiences provides assistance and guidance in the areas of professional development and career exploration. We support MCC students, alumni, K-12 students, and the community by enhancing employability skills, facilitating career connections, and providing opportunities to explore various career paths.

We offer assistance via phone, email, Zoom meetings and in-person and drop-ins at any of the main campus locations.

Career Experiences offers the following services for students and alumni and faculty and staff:

Veterans and Military Resource Center

Metropolitan Community College values its service members, Veterans, and military families and the unique experiences they bring to the campus community. The Veterans and Military Resource Center (VMRC) supports all military-connected students-including Active-Duty service members, National Guard members, Reservists, Veterans, and their families.  Support is available to all students regardless of whether they use VA or DoD education benefits, helping them transition to college and pursue their educational and career goals.

Mission and Services

With locations at the South Omaha Campus and Offutt AFB, the VMRC serves as the central hub for support and resources for military-connected students. The Center provides program information, educational counseling, and assistance to prospective and current students.

The VMRC assists students with applying for federal, Department of Defense (DoD), and state Veterans benefits, and serves as the primary point of contact for DoD Tuition Assistance (TA) and the My Career Advancement Account (MyCAA) programs. Staff also help students access campus, community, and government resources, monitor academic progress, and provide guidance on translating military training and experience into academic credit. The Center also supports faculty and staff in creating learning environments that enhance student Veteran success.

Transitional Support Services and Community Partnerships

To ease the transition from military to student life, the VMRC partners with VA and community providers. Services include counseling through the VA Veterans Integration to Academic Leadership (VITAL) Program, support from the Omaha Vet Center, and assistance from VA Health Care Outreach Coordinators for enrollment in VA healthcare. The Center also collaborates with Nebraska State Veterans Service Officers, Disabled American Veterans (DAV) counselors, Department of Labor Veteran Services and Disabled Veterans’ Outreach Program (DVOP) specialists, local employers, and various other Veteran-focused organizations.

Student Space and Engagement

The VMRC provides a safe and welcoming space for military-connected students and offers study areas, computer and printing access, academic support resources, day-use lockers, a meditation and reflection room, and complimentary refreshments. The Center also facilitates a discussion group for military-connected students, advises MCC’s Student Veterans Organization–a chapter of Student Veterans of America, and hosts college-wide events throughout the year that promote Veteran support, recognition, and community engagement.

TRIO Programs

The TRIO Programs (TRIO) are Federally funded outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve assist limited-income, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post baccalaureate programs.

Student Support Services

The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program furthers the MCC mission of educational excellence and equal access by providing first-generation college students with limited income and/or disabilities a multiplicity of academic and personal support services: study skills development to achieve academic success, tutoring, supplemental instruction to master course content, and intensive academic and personal advisement to build confidence and promote student success. SSS also offers the Dr. Bill Dodd Summer Bridge Program to first-year students, financial literacy education and scholarship/grant opportunities. These interconnected services increase persistence and encouragement for a unified bachelor’s degree program transition. TRIO/SSS includes the Single Parent/Displaced Homemaker program, which serves single parents, displaced workers, and pregnant students as they strive to meet their educational goals. Students must apply for program services; space is limited.

Single Parent/Displaced Homemaker Program

The Single Parent/Displaced Homemaker program provides workshops and personal assistance to single parents, single, pregnant women, and displaced homemakers who are accepted into the Student Support Services/TRIO program. Referral to other college offices and relevant outside community agencies is also available. The program also advises the Positive Opportunities for Parenting Solo (POPS) group. Participation in Student Support Services is not required to participate in POPS.

MCC Upward Bound Math and Science Program

The MCC TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science program (UMBS) is a program designed to enhance the math and science skills of participating students from Omaha Northwest High School. Its primary goal is to help students recognize and develop their potential in these subjects, encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in math and science, assist them in the college application process, and ultimately prepare them for careers in math and science fields.

MCC TRIO SSS-ESL

Metropolitan Community College’s TRIO Student Support Services-English as a Second Language program (TRIO SSS-ESL) is a federally funded program under the U.S. Department of Education. We provide opportunities for academic, social, and cultural development for multilingual students.

 

Who can join TRIO SSS-ESL?

Students must:

  • Be enrolled in credit classes at Metropolitan Community College.
  • Be a non-native English speaker, or speak, read, or write another language at home.
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.

Students must also meet at least ONE of the following criteria:

  • First Generation Student - Neither parent or guardian has earned a four-year college degree.
  • Low Income - Household taxable income does not exceed 150% of the federal poverty level.
  • Documented Disability - Have a documented physical or learning disability.

Applicants must not have already earned a two-year degree or higher.

Veterans Upward Bound Program

The TRIO Veterans Upward Bound program is designed to assist first-generation, limited-income veterans in developing the academic and other essential skills necessary to succeed in a postsecondary education program. The program provides assessment and enhancement of basic skills through advising, mentoring, tutoring, and academic instruction in core subject areas. Its primary goal is to increase the rate at which participants enroll in and complete postsecondary education programs. Furthermore, we assist program veterans in obtaining additional support services from other resources available locally to veterans. Services include:

  • Education/advising services designed to improve the financial and economic literacy of participants
  • Instruction in reading, writing, study skills, and other subjects necessary for success in education beyond high school
  • Academic, financial, or personal counseling
  • Tutorial services
  • Mentoring programs
  • Information on postsecondary education opportunities
  • Assistance in completing college entrance and financial aid applications
  • Assistance in preparing for college entrance exams
  • Information on the full range of Federal Student financial aid programs and benefits
  • Guidance and assistance in alternative education programs for secondary school dropouts that lead to receipt of a regular secondary school diploma, entry into general education development (GED) programs, or postsecondary education

To qualify for participation, applicants must be military veterans with over 180 days of active-duty service in the U.S. Armed Forces and must have received a discharge other than a dishonorable one. Alternatively, they may have been discharged due to a service-connected disability, or they may have been a member of a reserve component of the Armed Forces called to active duty for more than 30 days. Another eligible category is for those who were a member of a reserve component of the Armed Forces who served on active duty in support of a contingency operation on or after September 11, 2001. Lastly, applicants must have a high risk for academic failure.

MCC Police Department

You can find MCC Police information online at www.mccneb.edu/police, or simply by navigating the MCC website and selecting “MCC Police” found under the “About MCC” tab.

For emergencies and non-emergencies requiring police, fire or medical response, please call MCC Police direct at 531-622-2222 or 911.  You can also contact us by simply selecting the preset directory button, labeled “MCC POLICE” on any MCC office or classroom telephone.

Police Headquarters is located at Building 34, Fort Omaha Campus.

MCC Police is a fully accredited law enforcement agency and has the primary jurisdiction and responsibility to investigate crimes and provide police services for MCC locations within the four-county service area, 24 hours a day, seven days per week, including holidays.  MCC Police maintains a high level of visibility on campuses, which helps create a strong connection with the community.  The mission of the MCC Police is to provide a safe and secure environment in support of the College’s educational mission.

The MCC Emergency Notification System allows MCC Police to send information about real-time emergencies, which are distributed by way of:

  • Text messaging (SMS-based):
    • MCC students and staff are encouraged to enroll and participate in the MCC EMERGENCY text messaging alert system.
    • To use this option, students and employees can enroll through the MCC Emergency Notification System webpage for no charge. 
  • Alertus brand beacons using audible and visual modes.
  • Outdoor siren systems.
  • MCC students and staff via MCC email.

Student Wellness

How you feel matters! MCC is supporting students’ well-being inside and outside of the classroom. Student Wellness is a campus-wide initiative to support students in all eight areas of well-being. The eight dimensions of well-being that MCC focuses on are: social, physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, financial, occupational and environmental.
