RESP 2994 - Clinical Practicum IV

5.5 Credits

The student is assigned 16.5 hours per week to clinical practice in affiliated hospitals and healthcare agencies. This clinical course is designed to extend upon RESP 1993 by providing clinical exposure in the adult critical care unit. Emphasis will be placed on ventilator theory and patient management in both the acute care and long-term care settings. Additional rotations are scheduled in electrocardiography and diagnostic pulmonary function testing. An introduction to computerized clinical simulation exercise is also scheduled.

Course Objectives
1. Recall & demonstrate proficiency with the PAC’s listed in the course outline for Clinical Practicum I - RESP 1991, Clinical Practicum II - RESP 1992, and Clinical Practicum III - RESP 1993.

2. Explain the theory, as well as demonstrate the ability to perform the following:

Manual resuscitation. PAC #16
Ventilator weaning procedures. PAC #17
Endotracheal extubation. PAC #18
Discuss the importance of pulmonary function measurement in diagnosing and treating pulmonary disease. Cognitive Assessment #19
Discuss the importance of electrocardiography in the treatment of patients in the acute care setting. Cognitive Assessment #20

3. Demonstrate the methods for the safe handling of clean and contaminated patient care equipment and supplies.

4. Student exhibits courteous and pleasant demeanor, shows consideration, respect, honesty and integrity in the clinical setting, while recognizing social and cultural diversity.

5. Demonstrates the ability to gather and organize in written, verbal and electronic forms, information concerning a patient’s diagnosis, disease process, and treatment in an ethical and private manner.

6. Apply good clinical judgement to include organization, efficiency, safety, and confidence in the clinical setting.

7. Demonstrate the ability to appropriately apply HIPAA regulations.

8. Demonstrates the values of work habits, dependability, and reliability in a clinical setting.
