RESP 2101 - Current Concepts III

This course assists the student in integrating critical thinking and reasoning in the pulmonary management of the acutely ill adult client. The course outlines specific pulmonary diseases and their treatment. The course also includes discussions of current medical literature and case study presentations on topics related to adult critical care.

Course Objectives
1. Recognizes differences of various modes of ventilation and explain the clinical appropriateness of each mode.

2. Describe the etiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

3. Recalls the etiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of Tuberculosis.

4. Explain the clinical manifestations, pathophysiology, etiology, and management of the various forms of pleural and chest wall abnormalities.

5. Identifies the etiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of patients afflicted with neuromuscular diseases and the respiratory complications that they may exhibit.

6. Describe the etiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of pulmonary embolism.

7. Explain the sequential process used in weaning a patient from mechanical ventilation and in preparing for Extubation.

8. Demonstrate the ability to read and present, in both oral and written format, a summary of a professional journal article.

9. Recognize the indications and application of waveform capnography as well as interpret various waveforms used to monitor patients.
