RESP 1993 - Clinical Practicum III

5.5 Credits

The student is assigned 16.5 hours per week to clinical practice in affiliated hospitals and healthcare agencies. The course provides the introduction to the adult critical care setting with emphasis on ventilator management and airway care. An observational surgery rotation is also contained in this clinical practicum.

Course Objectives

1. Recall & demonstrate proficiency with the PAC’s listed in the course outline for Clinical Practicum I - RESP 1991, and Clinical Practicum II - RESP 1992.

2. Explain the theory, as well as demonstrate the ability to perform the following:

Suctioning. PAC #12
Mechanical ventilator preparation & initiation. PAC #13
Routine ventilator assessment and data collection. PAC #14
Humidification delivery systems. PAC #15

3. Observe the role of the anesthesiologist/CRNA in the operating room during induction and intubation of patients prior to surgical procedures.

4. Demonstrate the methods for the safe handling of clean and contaminated patient care equipment and supplies.

5. Student exhibits courteous and pleasant demeanor, shows consideration, respect, honesty, and integrity in the clinical setting, while recognizing social and cultural diversity.

6. Demonstrates the ability to gather and organize in written, verbal, and electronic forms, information concerning a patient’s diagnosis, disease process, and treatment in an ethical and private manner.

7. Apply good clinical judgement to include organization, efficiency, safety, and confidence in the clinical setting.

8. Demonstrate the ability to appropriately apply HIPAA regulations.

9. Demonstrates the values of work habits, dependability, and reliability in a clinical setting.
