RESP 2121 - Current Concepts IV

This course assists students in integrating advanced-level cardiopulmonary diagnostic testing into the care plan of the adult patient. It includes physician lectures, discussions directed from current medical literature, and case study presentations on topics requiring the use of both recall and critical-reasoning skills in a clinical setting.

Note: This course must be completed with a C or better.

Course Objectives

Discuss the development of therapist driven protocols and their importance to the respiratory care practitioner.

Identify the normal parameters and clinical significance of variations from the normal in commonly performed laboratory studies.

Describe the etiology, pathophysiology and treatment of smoke inhalation injuries and near drowning.

Identify disease processes associated with metabolic disorders and discuss the clinical implications when a metabolic disorder co-exists in a patient with a respiratory disorder.

Describe the etiology, pathophysiology and treatment of trauma related injuries to the pulmonary system.

Describe hyperbaric oxygen therapy and its indications for use in a clinical setting.

Discuss organ transplantation and the procedures required for harvesting of human organs.

Discuss the indications for and the different components of a sleep study and explain how sleep studies are useful in the diagnosis of OSA.

Produce a resume that describes their education, skills, experiences and measurable achievements with proper grammar, format and relevance as well as understand proper Interview etiquette in the Healthcare setting.

Discuss patient transport and disaster preparedness as it pertains to the respiratory care practitioner.
