RESP 2100 - Advanced Respiratory Care


4.5 Credits

This course covers advanced cardiopulmonary physiology and its application to the management of the patient in cardio-respiratory failure who requires mechanical ventilation. The course provides the student with demonstration and laboratory experiences with mechanical ventilator modes and setting adjustments, ventilator waveform analysis, ventilator troubleshooting, pulmonary function testing, and ECG testing. 

Note: This course must be completed with a C grade or better. Additional fees will be attached to this course for exam prep resources. 

Prerequisites: (2) RESP 1040  and RESP 1992

Course Objectives
  1. Review the indications and goals of continuous mechanical ventilation and various modes of ventilation utilized in the acute care setting.
  2. Describe the physical and mechanical aspects of mechanical ventilation.
  3. List the effects and complications of mechanical ventilation and its adjuncts and describe patient management techniques associated with mechanical ventilation.
  4. Evaluate ventilator graphics and utilize them to troubleshoot changes in patient condition.
  5. Describe various indications and diagnostic tests associated with pulmonary function testing.
  6. llustrate how various pulmonary function test results can aid in the diagnosis   and treatment of various pulmonary disorders.
