RESP 1040 - Respiratory Care Procedures II 4.5 Credits
The emphasis of this course is to develop skills in ventilator management. Emphasis is placed on Noninvasive ventilation, IPPB (Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing) therapy, CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy, assessment of respiratory failure, continuous mechanical ventilation techniques, physiologic aspects of mechanical ventilation, and invasive and non-invasive monitoring techniques.

Course Objectives
- Given a set of arterial blood gas values, interpret the acid-base and oxygenation status.
- Discuss the indications, goals, and hazards of IPPB therapy and demonstrate appropriate IPPB administration techniques.
- Discuss the indications and implications for the use of PAP as a hyperinflation technique.
- Identify indications and contraindications for NIV (noninvasive ventilation) as well as patients that may benefit from its use.
- Discuss the classification of mechanical ventilators, the indications for mechanical ventilation, and the patient monitoring techniques required during mechanical ventilation.
- Given selected mechanical ventilators, identify the various alarm system, oxygen controllers, humidification systems, flow controls and sensitivity systems for each.
- Given selected mechanical ventilators, assemble the breathing circuits, prepare each for continuous use and troubleshoot problems associated with each.
- Discuss the potential modifications made to ventilator settings and the criteria for weaning a patient from mechanical ventilation and list the indications, advantages, and disadvantages of each.
