RESP 1991 - Clinical Practicum I

5.5 Credits

The student is assigned 16.5 hours per week to clinical practice in affiliated hospitals and healthcare agencies. Along with an orientation to clinical policies and facilities, emphasis is placed upon the basics of oxygen therapy, patient assessment techniques, incentive spirometry, medical aerosol and metered dose inhaler therapy, and medical asepsis.

Course Objectives

Demonstrate the ability to perform accurate patient assessments. PAC #1
Successfully identify proper isolation, PPE use, hand hygiene, and disposal of waste. CA #2
Demonstrate the ability to safely handle and use medical gas cylinders. PAC #3
Explain the principles of oxygen therapy and demonstrate application of various oxygen delivery devices in patient care areas. PAC #3
Explain and demonstrate correct procedures for sustained maximum inspiration procedures. PAC #4
Demonstrate safe procedures in aerosolized drug administration. PAC #5
Explain and demonstrate correct procedures for the administration of metered dose inhaler (MDI)/dry powdered inhaler (DPI) therapy. PAC #6
Demonstrate the methods for handling clean and contaminated patient care equipment and supplies.
Interact with multidisciplinary team members.
Demonstrate the ability to gather and organize, in written form, information concerning a patient’s diagnosis, history, disease process, and treatment.
Demonstrate the ability to appropriately apply HIPAA regulations.
Demonstrate the values of Work Habits, Dependability and Reliability in the clinical setting.
