RESP 1010 - Introduction to Respiratory Care


4.5 Credits

This course provides information about the manufacture, transport, and storage of medical gases. Students are introduced to patient physical assessment, vital signs, and infection control techniques that will be utilized in patient care settings. Students are instructed in the application of the following therapy modalities: oxygen delivery devices, bland aerosol and humidity therapy, incentive spirometry, and aerosol delivery devices including SVN (Small Volume Nebulizer) DPI (Dry Powdered Inhaler), and MDI (Metered Dose Inhaler).

Course Objectives
1. Identify the appropriate techniques for inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation of the chest.
2. Identify normal and abnormal breath sounds and identify abnormal breathing patterns associated with lung disease.
3. List the five elements that constitute basic vital signs and recite the normal parameters for each variable.
4. Describe the physical properties of medical gases and explain the application of gas laws.
5. Describe the manufacture and storage of medical gases and identify the safety system features.
6. Explain the operation of reducing valves and flow regulating devices.
7. State the correct flowrate, concentration, indications for use, advantages, and disadvantages and proper methods of application of basic oxygen delivery systems.
8. Explain the principles of operation of medical gas analyzers and pulse oximeters and demonstrate their appropriate usage.
9. Explain the theory, to include indications, contraindications, and hazards, and demonstrate the correct application of aerosol and humidity therapy.
10. Explain the theory, to include indications, contraindications, and hazards, and demonstrate the correct application of incentive spirometry therapy.
11. Describe infection prevention strategies used in respiratory care and the personal protective equipment used.
12. Identify the chemical agents used for cleaning equipment and equipment handling procedures used to prevent the spread of pathogens.
