RESP 1030 - Respiratory Care Procedures I

4.5 Credits

This course is a study of general medical-surgical respiratory care procedures. Topics include bedside pulmonary mechanics, resuscitation devices, artificial airway management, suctioning, airway clearance therapies, bronchoscopy, and arterial blood gas puncture and analysis.

Note: This course needs to be completed with a C or better.

Course Objectives
1. Discuss the indications, complications and technique involved in obtaining an arterial blood gas sample.

2. Demonstrate the proper technique when obtaining an arterial blood sample on a mannikin.

3. Describe the various components of quality assurance with ABG analysis.

4. Identify indications, goals and hazards associated with all Airway Clearance Therapies.

5. Perform postural drainage and chest physiotherapy.

6. Describe the indications, techniques, and complications involved with the bronchoscopy procedure.

7. Demonstrate the correct application of resuscitation bags and perform manual ventilation on an adult mannikin.

8. Assess the need for oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airways and the proper selection and insertion of these devices.

9. Identify the indications, complications, and specific techniques related to suctioning the patient’s upper and lower airways.

10. Perform oral endotracheal intubation and extubation on an adult mannikin.

11. Perform suctioning through an artificial airway on an adult mannikin.

12. Identify the distinct styles and features of tracheostomy tubes.

13. Perform routine tracheostomy care on an adult mannikin.

14. Discuss the indications, complications and specific techniques associated with nasal and oral endotracheal intubation.

15. Perform the measurement of bedside pulmonary mechanics and discuss the significance of these values.
