RESP 1031 - Current Concepts I 2.0 Credits
Emphasis in this course is on obstructive lung disease. Included are common therapeutic modalities used in their treatment, laboratory values, principles of chest radiography, disease prevention and disease management. This course includes discussions of current medical literature, physician lectures and case presentations.
Prerequisites: (2) RESP 1010 and RESP 1020

Course Objectives
- Evaluate and interpret laboratory values and their ranges, relating to the pulmonary patient.
- Describe epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, pathophysiology, and management of asthma.
- Differentiate obstructive lung disease processes. Identify and describe the etiology, diagnosis, pathophysiology, and management of chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and bronchiectasis.
- Describe the medical hazards and the social implications involved with tobacco use and identify the various individual smoking cessation interventions.
- Determine whether a chest x-ray is normal or abnormal.
- Describe the generation of roentgen rays and the effects that density has upon the exposure of radiographic film.
- Explain the proper orientation of the patient on the x-ray and how to determine if a film is normal or abnormal.
- Evaluate Computed Tomography scans, Ultrasounds, magnetic resonance imaging, and nuclear medicine imaging scans and the indications for patients with respiratory disease.
