HDIM 2040 - Information Systems in Healthcare

In this laboratory course, students examine and analyze health information technology applications. Students apply principles to usability of health IT systems, configure of electronic health record systems, and examine the potential impact of system-facilitated errors. Students are introduced to the processes used for system acquisition and evaluation.

Corequisite: (1) HDIM 1030   must be taken at the same time as this course.

Course Objectives
  1. Identify common components of a health IT system.
  2. Describe core functions of a health IT system.
  3. Describe the elements of an effective and efficient health IT system.
  4. Define usability and describe general usability principles.
  5. Identify root causes of health IT-induced error and suggest solutions.
  6. Discuss the application of clinical decision support systems in clinical and administrative settings.
  7. Configure an electronic health record system to enable features required for meaningful use.
  8. Demonstrate beginning level competency in the use of general health information technology systems.
  9. Describe the steps in the systems development life cycle.
