HDIM 1030 - Healthcare Data Management and Use 4.5 Credits
Students learn the methods to access and retrieve healthcare data and medical records. These methods include master patient index, record identification and filing systems, record retention and disaster planning; electronic document management systems, health data registries, e.g., cancer registry; voice recognition, and management of medical transcription services including productivity, quality monitoring and budgeting.

Course Objectives
- Discuss the various numbering systems used in management of health information.
- Describe the purpose, development and maintenance of registries and indexes such as the master patient index, disease index, and operation indexes.
- Discuss the functions and responsibilities of disease registries with the focus on cancer registries.
- Apply retention and destruction policies for health information.
- Identify factors and resources that must be considered in developing a health information retention policy for a healthcare facility.
- Differentiate between terminal digit filing, straight numeric filing and alphabetic filing methods used in health information departments and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
- Determine the both human and equipment resources needed for an effective medical transcription service.
