RESP 1000 - Orientation to Respiratory Care

This course provides exploration into the field of respiratory care for students who are seeking a career in the profession. Emphasis is placed on the role of the respiratory care practitioner in dealing with the legal and psychological aspects of patient care. The student is acquainted with the medical terminology associated with the field of respiratory care. Other topics include employment opportunities, communication skills, and medical ethics.

Course Objectives
1. Identify the role of the professional respiratory care practitioner in today’s health care system.

2. Identify the educational and professional qualifications necessary to enter the respiratory care profession.

3. Describe effective communication in a health care setting.

4. Distinguish some key differences in a health care professional’s approach to

infants, children, adolescents, middle-aged individuals, and elderly people.

5. Identify the characteristics of confidentiality (HIPPA) and its importance in the health care setting.

6. Effectively analyze, define, pronounce, and spell medical terms appropriate to the respiratory care profession.
