NURS 2310 - Mental Health Nursing II

This course examines mental health, mental illness, nurse-client relationships, and self-awareness. Through the use of the nursing process, therapeutic communication, and caring behaviors, the course promotes the path to wellness in individuals, families, and groups. It examines the role of the psychiatric nurse as a member of the mental health team and considers current issues and trends in mental health and the impact on practice. The course integrates pathophysiology, nutrition, and pharmacology and provides clinical experiences in acute or chronic health facilities and community-based experiences.

Course Objectives
1. Utilize caring, nursing process, and shared clinical judgments and decisions to implement therapeutic interventions for the mentally ill client. (EOP SLO 1)
2. Make clinical practice decisions both independently and collaboratively that reflect professional values and knowledge of legal and ethical practices within the context of caring for the mentally ill client. (EOP SLO 2)
3. Apply the research process and the concepts of validity and reliability and their relationship to decision-making in mental health nursing practice. (EOP SLO 3)
4. Discuss professional, social, political, economic, and technological issues that affect the environment, health, and the care of clients coping with the lived experience of mental illness. (EOP SLO 4)
5. Participate as a critical thinker, teacher, collaborator, and user of nursing theory in the clinician role of mental health care giver by accepting responsibility for individuals and families as clients. (EOP SLO 5)
6. Integrate use of appropriate technology for the delivery of nursing care to the mentally ill client. (EOP SLO 6)
