LAWS 2322 - Family Law

4.5 Credits

Students review and analyze substantive and procedural laws affecting family relationships. Topics include the regulation of marriage, nonmarital families, domestic violence, divorce, property division, support, parenting and parenthood, and court jurisdiction of family law matters. Students research law and procedures, prepare memoranda, draft pleadings, motions, discovery, orders, and other legal documents, and calculate child support using mandatory court guidelines.

Course Objectives

Locate, describe, and analyze federal and state sources of law relating to family law.
Explain the intersection of family law with other areas of law.
Define and correctly use legal terminology relating to family law.
Gather and elicit information and evidence necessary to commence and complete a client matter.
Perform basic tasks a paralegal performs for attorneys in a family law environment.
Apply professional ethics rules to the work of a paralegal in family law.
