INTD 1320 - Interior Finishes and Materials

This course applies knowledge and understanding of interior materials, finishes, and products through the use of sampling techniques. The goal is to develop hands-on skills in identifying, selecting, and specifying materials and finishes for functional and aesthetic residential and commercial interiors.

Course Objectives
1. Environmental Concerns:

Define selected terminology pertaining to “green” design.
Discuss the pros and cons of selected materials and finishes contribution to air quality issues.

2. Paints and Wallcoverings:

Identify the various components and types of paint and stain.
Cite identifiable differences between commercial and residential wallcoverings.
Demonstrate how to write a basic material/finish specification for an architectural document.
Identify the various wallcovering types, dye and printing techniques, and backings.
Recall selected local vendors for use as a future design resource.

3. Flooring and Floorcoverings:

Identify and describe selected flooring materials to include natural, man-made, and composite.
List and identify potential end uses and advantages and disadvantages.
Identify basic construction and dye techniques, fibers, and textures of carpet.
Cite typical methods of installation.
Cite advantages and disadvantages of selected flooring materials depending upon their end use.
Recall selected local vendors for use as a future design resource.

4. Walls:

List and identify selected natural and man-made hard wall materials and finishes.
Cite typical patterns of installation for selected hard-surface materials.
Recall differences in fabrication for man-made hard wall end-use products.

5. Ceilings:

Recall various types of commercial and residential ceiling styles, materials, and installation methods.
Identify basic parts/areas of a commercial ceiling.
Recall important flammability and acoustical terms and testing methods relating to commercial ceilings.

6. Architectural Components:

Define major terms associated with architectural trim, fenestration, and hardware.

7. Cabinet Construction:

Discuss specific terminology and detail nomenclature pertaining to cabinet construction.
Recall category types of cabinet drawers, shelves, and doors.
Recall types of veneer matching, joinery, edge treatment, hardware, and styles pertaining to cabinets.
Discuss difference between cabinet slides and glides.
