INTD 1310 - Fundamentals of Textiles

This course features an introductory study of the field of textiles. It includes the knowledge and understanding of fibers, yarn, fabric construction, finishes, and color and design techniques used to create a textile product. The course emphasizes identifying the characteristics of each component and how they affect the possibilities and limitations of the product when used to address a given design problem.

Pre/Corequisite: (1) INTD 1210 must be taken at the same time or prior to this course.

Course Objectives

Define important criteria in selecting and specifying textiles.
Define essential terminology as related to textiles.
Identify important timelines for introduction of specific fibers.
Identify basic textile fiber and yarn definitions and characteristics.
Identify essential construction, dye, and finish processes and characteristics.
Describe basic user requirements and performance criteria relating to specific textiles.
Identify local fabric houses open to the (interior design) trade.
Identify pertinent textile flammability testing methods.
Analyze and identify textile products marketed for interiors and fashion design.
Formulate and evaluate suitable end uses for textile products marketed for interiors and textiles.
