INTD 1230 - Kitchen and Bath Design

This course provides an introduction to kitchen and bath design with emphasis on the application of NKBA guidelines. Students are exposed to planning guidelines, fixtures and appliances, plumbing, electrical and lighting basics, universal and ergonomic design, cabinetry, and materials and finishes appropriate to kitchen and bath design. Students demonstrate principles learned through conceptual studies and portfolio-ready projects.

Course Objectives

Apply the general principles and elements of design to the successful planning of kitchens and baths.
Cite the four characteristics essential to good kitchen and bath structural design.
Distinguish the basic construction methods for kitchens and baths to include codes and standards.
Examine how Universal, ergonomic, and sustainable design apply to kitchens and baths.
Apply basic kitchen and bath design principles in terms of space planning, appliances, cabinetry, HVAC, plumbing and electrical codes, spatial clearances and ADA Guidelines, and fixtures.
Know electrical and lighting basics related to terms, receptacle placement, codes and standards.
Demonstrate applicable finishes and materials appropriate for kitchen and bath in terms of flooring, walls, ceilings, and countertops.
Introduce computer-aided drawing for kitchen design via 20-20.
