ENGL 1313 - Creative Nonfiction Writing Studio

Students explore the elements of creative nonfiction, such as narrative, lyricism, imagery, symbolism, and theme. Students read and work in a range of creative nonfiction styles, such as memoir, narrative journalism, travel writing, nature writing, and cultural criticism. In addition to writing their own creative nonfiction, the students critically read, discuss, and respond to published creative nonfiction and the nonfiction of other students.

Course Objectives

Use and evaluate the use of literary elements in creative nonfiction.
Compose in multiple subgenres of creative nonfiction, such as nature writing, cultural observation, memoir, travel writing, or narrative journalism.
Effectively communicate possibilities for revision in their own creative nonfiction and that of their peers, keeping in mind the possibilities for heightening the rhetorical effect of literary elements.
Revise in content and structure based on peer and instructor feedback.
Appropriately format, adhere to conventions of, and control surface features of nonfiction.
