ENGL 1310 - Creative Writing

Students will learn and practice the core elements of craft (Imagery, Genre, Musicality, Dialogue, Characterization, Conflict/Tension, and Point of View) that are used to create successful stories and poems and discuss and respond to the use of these elements in published work and the work of other students.

Course Objectives

Define and use the core elements of craft: Imagery, Genre, Musicality, Dialogue, Characterization, Conflict/Tension, and Point of View.
Articulate how these choices, in the student’s own work and the work of others, contribute to the reader’s experience: creating an immersive and satisfying experience for the reader; generating empathy and challenging assumptions; communicating an emotional impact.
Use a writing process in which planning, drafting, feedback and revision center on deliberate choices in the application of core elements.
Format appropriately and adhere to the conventions of both poetry and prose genres.
