ENGL 1311 - Poetry Writing Studio

Students explore the elements and styles of poetry, practicing form, musicality, imagery, and metaphor. Students read and write lyric and narrative poems in both traditional forms and free verse. In addition to writing their own poems, students critically read, discuss, and respond to published poetry and the poems of other students.

Course Objectives

Use and evaluate the use of literary elements in poetry.
Compose lyric and narrative poems in both traditional forms and free verse.
Effectively communicate possibilities for revision in their own poems and those of their peers, keeping in mind the possibilities for heightening the rhetorical effect of literary elements.
Revise in content and structure based on peer and instructor feedback.
Appropriately format, adhere to conventions of, and control surface features of poetry.
