PSYC 2350 - Fundamentals of Abnormal Psychology

This course examines historical and contemporary views and issues of abnormal behavior. It also explores methods of explaining, diagnosing, and treating disordered behavior.

Prerequisites: (1) PSYC 1010  or PSYC 1120

Course Objectives
  1. Distinguish four criteria by which thoughts, behaviors, and emotions may be defined as abnormal.
  2. Differentiate the three categories or clinical assessment and identify at least two examples of each.
  3. Discuss the controversy associated with the Diagnostic Statistical Manual, 5th Edition (DSM5) and the advantages and disadvantages of diagnosing abnormal behaviors.
  4. Describe factors and systems which have an impact on the mental health and access to care among diverse communities.
  5. Inventory the major contemporary perspectives and theories used to explain and treat abnormality and psychological disorders.
  6. Describe the symptoms and features associated with the major psychological disorders in each classification of the DSM 5.
  7. Compare the various therapies and approaches used to treat psychological problems and disorders.
  8. Utilize critical reasoning skills to apply theoretical concepts and empirical evidence to the understanding of mental health issues, including hypothetical case studies.
  9. Formulate principles of ethics for practitioners/treatment in the field of psychiatry and mental health.
  10. Utilize APA-style format in writing assignments.
