PSYC 2350 - Fundamentals of Abnormal Psychology 4.5 Credits
This course examines historical and contemporary views and issues of abnormal behavior. It also explores methods of explaining, diagnosing, and treating disordered behavior.
Prerequisites: (1) PSYC 1010 or PSYC 1120

Course Objectives
- Distinguish four criteria by which thoughts, behaviors, and emotions may be defined as abnormal.
- Differentiate the three categories or clinical assessment and identify at least two examples of each.
- Discuss the controversy associated with the Diagnostic Statistical Manual, 5th Edition (DSM5) and the advantages and disadvantages of diagnosing abnormal behaviors.
- Describe factors and systems which have an impact on the mental health and access to care among diverse communities.
- Inventory the major contemporary perspectives and theories used to explain and treat abnormality and psychological disorders.
- Describe the symptoms and features associated with the major psychological disorders in each classification of the DSM 5.
- Compare the various therapies and approaches used to treat psychological problems and disorders.
- Utilize critical reasoning skills to apply theoretical concepts and empirical evidence to the understanding of mental health issues, including hypothetical case studies.
- Formulate principles of ethics for practitioners/treatment in the field of psychiatry and mental health.
- Utilize APA-style format in writing assignments.
