HMSV 2050 - Ethics and Professionalism

4.5 Credits

Students consider a wide range of ethical issues as they apply to human services and alcohol and drug counseling. These issues include confidentiality, dual relationships, competency and referral, counselor values and conflicts, legality and ethics, client welfare, establishing appropriate limits and boundaries in the client relationship, informed consent, dealing with impaired professionals, professionalism (including responsibility for competence, professional development, burnout and self-care), and the need for cultural diversity. Ethical codes of professional organizations will be examined as well. These organizations include, but are not limited to, NOHSE, NAADAC, ACA, APA, ARCA and NASW. Also included will be information on work behavior and work attitude, professional presentation and development at a practicum site.

Prerequisites: (2) HMSV 1140; plus HMSV 1160 if in alcohol and drug counseling option or HMSV 1010 if in general human services option

Pre/Corequisite: (1) HMSV 1130 - must be taken either prior to or at the same time as this course.

Course Objectives

Define ethics and aspirational or virtue ethics.
Compare and contrast the relationship between ethics and the law.
Identify and describe the steps involved in ethical decision making.
Identify, explain and be able to apply basic ethical principles involved with both general human service work and chemical dependency counseling.
Identify and describe positive work behavior necessary for the practicum experience.
Describe how professional appearance and behavior are necessary for practicum.
Identify and describe personnel issues that may present potential conflict in practicum and work.
Describe selected policies and procedures related to the practicum.
