HMSV 1160 - Medical and Social Aspects of Addictions

Students study the physiological, psychological and sociological aspects of alcohol/drug use, abuse and dependence. The classifications and basic pharmacology of drugs, basic physiology and the effects of drug use on the systems of the human body and alcohol and drug tolerance will be discussed.

Course Objectives
  1. Demonstrate and describe knowledge of the historical etiological, behavioral, cultural aspects and belief systems about alcohol/drug use and current status of alcohol/drugs as a social factor in the United States.
  2. Explain the various definitions of alcohol/drug dependency and the relationship of these definitions to treatment methods and outcomes.
  3. Examine and discuss the disease concept of alcohol/drug dependency as it impacts the individual, the family, and their culture.
  4. Compare and contrast the psychopharmacology of the major categories of psychoactive drugs.
