CHEM 1010 - College Chemistry

6.5 Credits

CHEM 1010 covers principles relevant to a basic understanding of chemistry.  The topics include uncertainty in measurements, elements, atomic structure, compounds and chemical bonding, stoichiometry, gas laws, solutions, acid/base chemistry, and equilibria. This course includes both lecture and lab components. Laboratory activities include atomic structure, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, gas laws, solutions, acid/base chemistry, titration and equilibria.

Prerequisites: College-level reading, writing, and math proficiency; MATH 0931 or MATH 0960

Lecture Hours: 5.0
Lab Hours: 4.5
Internship Hours: 0.0
Clinical or Practicum Hours: 0.0

Course Objectives

  1. Describe, interpret and explain basic chemical concepts;
  2. Write routine chemical formulas and name chemical compounds;
  3. Write and balance chemical equations and explain the various classifications of chemical reactions based on a chemical equation;
  4. Use dimensional analysis to set up and solve problems;
  5. Explain the correlation between what is happening in a system as viewed on the macroscopic scale with what is happening on the submicroscopic (atomic or molecular) scale;
  6. Relate the properties of elements and compounds based on their chemical structures;
  7. Relate how the knowledge obtained in this course applies to physical and biological systems.

Additionally, Students will demonstrate laboratory proficiency in the following areas:

1. Compliance with all safety requirements in a laboratory setting;

2. Knowledge of the location and operation of safety equipment;

3. Safe handling and use of both laboratory chemicals and laboratory equipment in the laboratory setting;

4. Proper and safe disposal of all laboratory chemicals;

5. Safe handling of electrical equipment;

6. Handling/use of laboratory equipment including:

  1. lighting a Bunsen burner
  2. use of a pipet, balance, buret and other standard laboratory glassware

7. Relating classroom concepts to a laboratory setting;

8. Collection and interpretation of data in the laboratory including creating and analyzing graphical data.
