Health Data and Information Management (HDIAS)

Academic Focus Area: Health Professions
 

Graduates of the Health Data and Information Management (HDIM) program are prepared to work in health information management (HIM) in organizations that create, manage, and utilize health information. Their roles range from clinical coder, data analyst, and cancer registrar to electronic health record specialist. The program combines online instruction, online practical activities, and an in-person practicum experience to prepare students for entry-level employment in the health information management field. Graduates are prepared to pursue a bachelor’s degree at an accredited health information management college or university.

The HDIM program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Graduates are eligible to take the national Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam.

Health Data and Information Management (HDIAS)

The following plan is designed to be the most direct path to degree completion and is based on a fall or spring quarter start. Students are expected to meet with their student success navigator or advisor to plan a customized course schedule that meets their specific needs. Program Level Student Learning Outcomes


  1. Understand the functions of the health information professional and department in healthcare environments.
  2. Successfully apply principles and applications of diagnostic and procedural coding and grouping.
  3. Apply the principles of health law, privacy and ethics with regards release of healthcare information.
  4. Understand the methods to collect, access and retrieve and retain healthcare data and medical records.
  5. Understand and apply statistics related to healthcare.
  6. Understand and apply the functions of data management including creating a data dictionary, creating a data base and retrieving and evaluating reports from the data.
  7.  Apply the principles of revenue cycle management to compare different insurance payors and how they reimburse healthcare claims.
