PHYS 1410 - Elementary General Physics I


7.5 Credits

This course is the first of an algebra college physics sequence. Students learn scientific inquiry through the use of calculations and critical reasoning through the study of motion, work and energy, momentum, gravitation, fluids, and thermodynamics. This course include both lecture and lab components.

Prerequisites: (1) MATH 1312 or higher

Course Objectives
  1. Use significant figures, dimensional analysis and manipulation of equations to solve problems;
  2. Distinguish between vector and scalar physical quantities, and perform simple vector operations;
  3. Define uniform accelerated motion and solve simple problems involving uniformly accelerated motion;
  4. Apply Newton’s three laws of motion to physical situations;
  5. Apply the concepts of work, energy, and conservation of energy to physical situations;
  6. Distinguish between linear momentum and impulse and apply of the law of conservation of momentum to physical situations;
  7. Solve problems involving circular motion and angular kinematics;
  8. Analyze the behavior of fluids and solids;
  9. Use the thermal properties of liquids and solids to solve problems involving heat transfer and laws of thermodynamics
