MATH 2000 - Mathematics for Elementary Teachers 4.5 Credits
Students learn the conceptual underpinnings behind the arithmetical reasoning typically taught in school curriculum. Students practice concepts involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of rtional numbers. Students gain the skills necessary not only to solve mathematical probelms from a variety of approaches but also understand the reasoning that makes those approaches valid, especially if they are planning on teaching mathematics at the K-6 level.
Prerequisites: (2) Within two years, successful completion of MATH 1300 or MATH 1305 or MATH 1410 or MATH 1425 and EDUC 1110, all with a grade of C or better.

Course Objectives
- Solve fraction multiplication and division problems using area model representations without use of the standard algorithm.
- Explain the conceptual underpinnings of addition, subtraction, and multiplication algorithms with whole numbers using base-ten model representations and area model.
- Explain the conceptual underpinnings of addition and subtraction of signed numbers using set-model representations and number-line model representations.
- Solve problems involving addition and multiplication using properties of arithmetic.
