HLTH 1500 - Intro to Health and Wellness Coaching 4.5 Credits
Students learn the knowledge and skills necessary to become effective Health and Wellness Coaches. Emphasizing evidence-based strategies, students explore core coaching theories, models of behavior change, and client-centered communication techniques. Students identify and apply the theories to foster client engagement, facilitate interventions, and sustainable behavior change. This course introduces foundational principles aligned with The National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC).

Course Objectives

Define the principles, scope, and ethical considerations of health coaching, including confidentiality, professional boundaries and client-centered care.

Demonstrate how to establish coach presence, self-awareness, and self-regulation.

Demonstrate how to establish a growth-enhancing relationship and prepare for, organize, and culminate in coaching sessions and agreements.

Define the components of motivational interviewing (MI) techniques and identify how they enhance client engagement.

Identify and analyze the components of personalized health plans and the use of goal setting frameworks.

Define and match lifestyle management strategies and techniques to client behaviors and intended outcomes.

Demonstrate cultural humility and adaptability in coaching diverse populations while addressing health disparities.

Equip clients with self-management tools for sustaining healthy lifestyle changes and long-term wellbeing.
