This course introduces the assessment and management of trauma, obstetric, pediatric, and geriatric patients in the prehospital setting. Students also study EMS operations, including extrication, incident management, and response to mass-casualty and terrorism-related incidents. This classroom instruction provides students with the knowledge to deliver safe, effective care within the EMT scope of practice. This course is designed to be taken along with the corequisite lab and Clinical portions as the practical components.

Course Objectives
1. Analyze the pathophysiology, assessment findings, and management priorities for traumatic injuries, including head, spine, chest, abdominal, and musculoskeletal trauma.

2. Identify key components of trauma assessment and determien treament and transport needs based on clinical findings.

3. Explain the physiologic changes of pregnancy and apply appropriate interventions for obstetric and gynecologic emergencies, including childbirth.

4. Integrate age-specific considerations into the assessment and management of pediatric medical and trauma patients.

5. Evaluate the unique healthcare needs of geriatric patients and individuals with special challenges, and adapt assessment and treatment strategies accordingly.

6. Compare and contrast principles of EMS operations, including vehicle safety, ambulance operations, hazardous materials awareness, and incident management.

7. Identify and describe safe rescue techniques, including patient extrication from vehicles.

8. Assess threats related to mass-casualty incidents, terrorism, and weapons of mass destruction, and formulate appropriate safety and response actions for EMTs.
