EMSP 1102 - Emergency Medical Technician 1 Lab


2.0 Credits

This laboratory course provides students with practical training in core EMT skills, including patient assessment, airway management, oxygen therapy, CPR, and defibrillation. Hands-on simulations prepare students to perform essential prehospital procedures safely and effectively; including patient monitoring and medication administration for common medical emergencies.

Course Objectives
  1. Demonstrate systematic medical patient assessments, integrating airway, breathing, circulation, and history-taking skills.
  2. Perform airway management techniques including head tilt-chin lift, jaw thrust, suctioning, NPA/OPA insertion, supraglottic airway placement, and bag-valve-mask ventilation.
  3. Apply oxygen delivery devices-including nasal cannula, non-rebreather, partial rebreather, simple mask, Venturi mask, CPAP, and oxygen humidifiers-based on patient presentation.
  4. Demonstrate proficiency in basic life support interventions including CPR, Heimlich maneuver, AED/defibrillation, and use of mechanical CPR devices.
  5. Acquire, interpret, and transmit basic vital signs including monitoring data, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, blood glucose, etc. 
  6. Administer emergency medications through oral, sublingual, intranasal, intramuscular, auto-injector, inhaled, and nebulized routes in accordance with EMT protocols.
  7. Provide appropriate care for time-sensitive emergencies including anaphylaxis, opioid overdose, chemical exposure, hypoglycemia, chest pain of suspected ischemic origin, and respiratory distress.
  8. Perform essential supportive skills including eye irrigation, nasal swab specimen collection, and monitoring of IV/IO infusion pumps during patient care.
