BIOS 2610 - Introduction to Biomanufacturing 6.0 Credits
This is the second course in the introductory biotechnology sequence. Students build on foundational laboratory skills as they learn knowledge and techniques used by entry-level technicians in bioprocessing. Students explore cell culture techniques, fermentation processes, upstream and downstream processing, and scale-up methods.
Prerequisites: (1) BIOS 1610
Recommended: BIOS 1450 and BIOS 2150

Course Objectives
- Explore the biomanufacturing/bioindustrial industry and careers available.
- Apply safety rules and regulations in the biomanufacturing workplace.
- Demonstrate Good Documentation Practices (GDP) in accordance with GMP principles.
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Demonstrate aseptic technique in all related class activities such as working in a biosafety cabinet, handling autoclaved materials, preparing materials, and using bioreactors.
- Describe the biomanufacturing processes that utilize bacteria, yeast, and mammalian cells.
- Describe the basic parts and function of motors, pumps, and valves as related to the biomanufacturing industry.
- Perform procedures involved in upstream processing such as passaging cells, preparing media and solutions, setting up and running a bioreactor, implementing process control and monitoring, and harvesting for downstream processing.
- Perform procedures involved in downstream processing such as filtration, chromatography, and centrifugation.
- Practice Lean Manufacturing concepts.
