BIOS 1610 - Foundations of Biotechnology

6.0 Credits

Students learn introductory knowledge and skills needed for entry-level work in the biotechnology industry and practice safety, good documentation practices, and following standard operating procedures. Students gain hands-on experience with common laboratory activities involving aseptic technique, biotechnology equipment, and solution preparation. Students also learn the basics of cleanroom operations and growing bacterial cultures.

Note: Students must purchase a pair of ANSI Z.87 rated indirectly vented goggles and a Lab Coat for class.

Prerequisites: Math 0960 or higher and college-level reading, and writing proficiency.

Course Objectives

Define biotechnology, biomanufacturing, and bioprocessing describing career options in each.
Apply safety rules and regulations followed in biotechnology settings.
Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Demonstrate Good Documentation Practices (GDP) including correct use of batch records.
Apply cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilization techniques to cleanrooms and biotechnology equipment.
Demonstrate aseptic technique in all related class activities such as working in a biosafety cabinet, handling autoclaved materials, transferring raw materials, and passaging cell cultures.
Perform lab procedures with standard biotechnology equipment, instruments, and supplies.
Practice measurement methods involving volume, mass, and pH.
Describe the process of bacterial growth and fermentation and correlate methods used in bioprocessing to the standard growth curve.
Explain the purpose of engineering controls used to mitigate cleanroom contamination including directional air handling and filtration, pressure and room design, closed process systems, and equipment.
