BIOS 1450 - Biology I 7.5 Credits
This general biology series is taught in a two-course sequence: BIOS 1450 Biology I and BIOS 1750 Biology II In this first course, Biology I, students will learn the physical and chemical basis of life including molecular and cellular structure and function, energy and metabolism, genetics and inheritance, and the evolutionary processes resulting in the diversity of life. Both courses must be successfully completed to transfer as a two-semester general biology course. This course includes both lecture and lab components.
Prerequisites: Math 0960 or higher and college-level reading, and writing proficiency.

Course Objectives 1. Explain how the structure and interactions of molecules control cell processes.
2. Identify and explain the function of major cell structures.
3. Explain cellular metabolic processes including: transcription, translation, cell division, cellularrespiration, photosynthesis, and DNA replication.
4. Explain the contemporary applications of biotechnology.
5. Describe how genetic information is passed between generations.
6. Practice using the scientific method.
7. Demonstrate efficient and effective use of the light microscope.
8. Explain the process of evolution and present several types of evidence for evolution.
