ENGL 2500 - Introduction to Poetry

Students explore the genres, craft elements, and themes of poetry by critically reading, discussing, and responding in writing to a culturally diverse selection of works. Students learn to appreciate poetry as essential to understanding self and society.

Course Objectives

Analyze rhetorical elements in poetry.
Contextualize poems biographically, socially, culturally, philosophically, and historically.
Identify and examine multiple perspectives in and among poems.
Discover and explain universal themes in poems.
Explore and articulate their own perspectives on universal themes in poems.
Discuss, write, and independently engage with literary art to demonstrate an appreciation of poetry.
