MATH 1312 - Intermediate Algebra 4.5 Credits
This course extends student algebra skills from previous courses and provides new learning to prepare students for future mathematics courses. Topics included are: functions and their applications; polynomial, radical, exponential, and rational expressions and equations and their applications; systems of linear equations and their applications; operations on complex numbers; graphing linear, piecewise, and quadratic functions; and solving and graphing inequalities.
Prerequisites: MATH 0960 with a P or MCC placement test within 2 years or placement via ACT witin 3 years

Course Objectives
- Solve absolute value equations and linear inequalities and express solutions using interval notation.
- Define a function and its notation, evaluate functions, state the domain and range of functions, combine functions with arithmetic operations.
- Graph linear functions, linear inequalities, piecewise functions, and quadratic functions.
- Determine equations of lines given their characteristics.
- Solve systems of linear equations in two and three variables, apply them to solve application problems.
- Simplify polynomial expressions, factor polynomials, and solve polynomial equations including application problems.
- Simplify rational expressions, including complex expressions, and solve rational equations and application problems.
- Solve quadratic equations with real and complex solutions using various methods.
- Simplify radical expressions, solve radical equations, and perform operations with complex numbers.
- Perform operations on rational exponents and relate these to radical expressions.
