COMS 1000 - Fundamentals of Communication

Students gain a broad overview of three focus areas of communication: interpersonal (communication between two people), small group communication, and public speaking. Students will practice speaking and writing skills in each focus area, producing speeches, written reports, and multi-media presentations.

Course Objectives
Interpersonal Communication unit:

Identify and analyze self-perceptions as well as the perceptions of others
Explain verbal and nonverbal communication concepts and principles
Engage in active listening
Describe communication theories and perspectives

Small Group Communication unit:

Work effectively in small groups, recognizing diversity of group members, managing conflict, and fostering leadership)
Describe group communication, formation, and theories
Practice effective group presentation skills

Public Speaking unit:

Select appropriate strategies to overcome communication apprehension
Create multi-media presentations (podcast, videocast, social media post)
Write text-based supporting materials for presentations (sourced outline, executive summary, talking points)
Create audience-focused presentations with supportive research
