HIMS 1005 - Introduction to Electronic Health Records

4.5 Credits

Students learn about the core concepts and features of electronic health record systems (EHRs). Students gain an awareness of how the EHR supports efficiencies and accuracy within both inpatient and outpatient facilities, and how EHRs contribute to the goals of increased patient safety and security. Students work in an online simulated system to gain hands-on experience in the navigation of a variety of EHR applications.

Course Objectives

Identify the core components of an electronic health record.
Describe interoperability.
Identify the different healthcare settings.
Explain the health information professional’s role in EHRs
Identify the sources for standards and guidelines for an EHR system
Differentiate between acute and ambulatory care.
Describe billing, reimbursement, insurance, and revenue cycle management.
Define personal health records and patient portals.
Demonstrate the technical skills and understanding necessary to access an EHR system to perform a variety of assigned functions with an EHR.
Develop critical thinking and decision-making skills to address the various issues related to an EHR in the healthcare field.
