LAWS 1000 - Introduction to Legal Studies

Students explore the US legal environment from a macroscopic and individual level. They learn how law germinates from public discourse to solve identified problems, how it is then formally enacted in the legislative process, enforced and administered by the executive branch, and interpreted by pursuit of legal remedies before the judiciary. Students investigate the roles individuals play in the legal arena and their own potential interactions in and with the legal system. They learn how to interact with others in the legal field, including use of interpersonal skills, working in teams, practicing effective communication skills, and utilizing problem-solving techniques. Students also create a career portfolio and are introduced to work expectations and job search strategies in the legal field.

Course Objectives

Demonstrate knowledge of the organization of the national government, including the interrelationships between and among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, as well as their interplay with state and local governments.
Summarize key elements of the United States Constitution and changes related to judicial interpretations.
Explain the process by which citizens develop their political values, and how these get expressed in public opinion, party politics, and interest group activity.
Examine the various roles of individuals involved with the legal system.
Practice desirable employability skills leading to success in the workplace.
Ascertain what involvement the student would like to have with the legal system, in particular their possible role as a legal professional.
Develop a professional career portfolio.
