SOWK 2120 - Race, Class, and Gender

This course examines the effects of race, class, and gender on social policy and social injustice. The focus is on institutional manifestations of racism, classism, and sexism, and how these are interconnected and are mutually reinforcing. The consequences of institutionalized oppressions are examined at the individual, group, family, and societal levels.

Course Objectives

Demonstrate how various cultures structures and values (racism, ageism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism, and classism) oppress, marginalize, alienate, or create or enhance privilege or power.
Display sufficient awareness to eliminate the influence of personal biases and values in working with diverse groups.
Communicate how values and personal biases affect our understanding of differences in shaping life experiences.
Display ability to advance human rights, social and economic justice by communicating the forms (race, ethnicity, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, ability, socioeconomic, class, and religion/spirituality) and mechanisms of oppression and discrimination.
