FREN 1110 is the first of three sequential courses that teach the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in French. Students build these skills by preparing for the unit objectives with grammar tutorials, interactive vocabulary presentations, authentic readings, and corresponding assessment activities.

Course Objectives

Listening: interpret words and phrases from simple questions, statements, and high-frequency commands, as well as information from sentence-length speech in basic personal and social contexts.
Speaking: communicate short messages on highly predictable, everyday topics that affect them directly, primarily through the use of isolated words and phrases that have been encountered, memorized, and recalled.
Reading: identify key words, cognates, formulaic phrases across a range of highly contextualized texts. They also will be able to decipher predictable language and messages, and convey basic information with contextual or extra linguistic support.
Writing: combine learned vocabulary and structures to create simple sentences on familiar topics of daily life.
Culture: compare Francophone cultures and histories in several French-speaking countries.
