This course is an introduction to the craft of the playwright. Students study the fundamentals of dialogue, character development, and scene structure through writing exercises, workshops, and discussion.

Course Objectives
1. Replicate the natural rhythms and intonations of human speech.
2. Create characters with both unique and recognizable qualities.
3. Identify dramatic conflict within and between characters.
4. Integrate character, dialogue, setting, and conflict into plot and story development.
5. Recognize a variety of approaches to playwriting by examining works and styles of major playwrights.
6. Utilize constructive, specific feedback in play reading responses for revision.
