THEA 1000 - Introduction to Theatre

4.5 Credits

Students survey the various facets of art and craft of theatre, with emphasis on the relationship between theatre and culture as well as theatre’s contributions to literature, film, and television. All elements and professions of theatre are explored: the dramatist, the producer, the director, the actor, the production designers, the stage manager, the tech director and crew, and the role of the audience. An overview of theatre history and theatrical genres is included.

Course Objectives

1. Show connections between theatre history and the life and culture of the times.

2. Explain the importance of the audience to theatrical productions.

3. Identify the demands, training and discipline required for the actor’s and director’s art and craft and that of other theatre practitioners.

4. Identify the various forms of staging.

5. Recognize the importance of technical theatre: set, lighting, costume, and sound design and aspects of theatre architecture.

6. Critique theatrical productions.

7. Discuss theatre as a unique, universal expression of the human spirit.
