Students with no prior formal musical education become informed listeners as they learn basic elements of music such as rhythm, melody, and harmony and advanced concepts such as meaning and style. Students’ active listening to music beyond their own playlists introduces them to the many communities and diversity of the world.

Course Objectives

1. Identify basic core elements of music, such as melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, timbre, and form.

2. Apply basic music terminology when discussing the overarching style characteristics of the major historical periods and genres of Western art music.

3. Identify how music was shaped by its social, cultural, and historical contexts.

4. Discuss the contributions of specific composers and performers throughout history.

5. Connect specific pieces of music from their own current playlists to their historical and aesthetic contexts.

6. Practice effective listening techniques.
