This course is a survey of the evolution of costume and fashion design from ancient Egypt to modern times. Students become familiar with and learn to recognize characteristics of various historic fashion silhouettes and their application to current design trends.

Course Objectives

Identify basic design characteristics, silhouettes, terminology, motifs, and visual examples of fashion designs from antiquity to present day.
Relate historical fashion designs to a chronological timeline.
Discuss the influence of political, social, economic, religious, and world events on fashion design from antiquity to present day.
Identify prominent fashion designers, fashion houses, and fabricators from historical to contemporary time periods.
