HIMS 2110 - Principles of Management in Healthcare

This course acquaints healthcare practitioners with management and supervision concepts essential to the understanding of the organizational environment in the healthcare field. Topics include management concepts; leadership and supervision; delegation and communication; financial management; planning, decision-making, and organizing; employment law; human resources management (staffing, performance evaluation, employee retention, training, and development); policies and procedures; compliance regulations; adaptation, motivation, and conflict management; and strategic management.

Prerequisites: Students must have successfully completed 50 hours of coursework prior to enrolling in this course OR program director approval.

Course Objectives
  1. Describe the basic fundamentals of supervision and leadership styles in a healthcare facility.
  2. Identify leadership and managerial concepts and skills utilized in today’s healthcare facilities.
  3. Apply skills in human resources management, including personnel recruitment, new employee orientation, leadership, motivation principles, staff development, counseling, performance feedback, and managing stress and conflict.
  4. Explain the ways in which gender, race, class, culture, and other contextual differences affect people in the healthcare workplace.
  5. Explain appropriate managerial knowledge of employment laws, safety and workplace violence, HIPAA privacy and security, cultural diversity, complaints and grievances, and fraud and abuse.
  6. Compare and contrast the steps in the reimbursement cycle.
  7. Describe the practice manager duties in quality management, strategic planning, quality improvement, utilization management, risk management, and physician quality reporting.
  8. Evaluate market needs to develop healthcare marketing plans that are competitive and promote patient loyalty in a globalized work environment.
  9. Analyze the major characteristics of cost control and budgeting utilized by healthcare managers.
  10. Illustrate appropriate written and oral communication skills in the supervisory role.
  11. Integrate critical-thinking and problem-solving skills essential to career success in the healthcare field.
