HDIM 1010 - Healthcare Delivery Systems

Students learn a broad range of career options in the health information management profession, the functions of a health information manager in the healthcare environment; and the resources used by HIM professionals.  This course is an overview of the components of the healthcare delivery system in the United States; the organizations that provide healthcare, the external forces affecting healthcare organizations, and the professionals that provide the services. Students examine the organizational components of healthcare organizations: the governing board, the medical staff and the administration.

Course Objectives
  1. Describe the characteristics that distinguish a professional from a non-professional.
  2. Describe the functions, responsibilities, and duties of a HIM Professional to someone without knowledge of the career.
  3. Explain the process and eligibility requirements to earn the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential.
  4. Describe the types of jobs and places of employment for HIM professionals.
  5. Identify the major players (stakeholders) in the healthcare field and discuss their interrelationships.
  6. Evaluate the need for cultural competence with regards HIM related functions.
  7. Identify the determinants of health in a population.
  8. Define public health and identify its core functions and activities.
  9. Differentiate the levels of the healthcare services along the continuum of care by describing the types of services provided and the organizations that provide them.
  10. Describe and distinguish between the types of controls placed on healthcare organizations.
  11. Identify the functions of a healthcare facility.
  12. Classify healthcare facilities according to control/ownership, length of stay, and clinical services.
  13. Describe the relationship physicians have with hospitals and other healthcare organizations where they may practice.
  14. Delineate the functions of a medical/professional staff in a healthcare organization.
