LAWS 1101 - Introduction to Law & the Legal Profession

Students explore the field of law and history of law, how the various areas of law impact society, basic legal principles, legal terminology, the judicial system, legislation, criminal and civil law and procedure, juvenile law, alternative dispute resolution, and the elements of a trial.

Summarize information about the US legal system.
Define legal vocabulary from various types of law.
Apply legal concepts from various types of law to factual situations.
Examine the various roles of individuals involved with the legal system.
Understand how to conduct legal research and the tools involved.
Appreciate and identify various litigation and transactional practice areas and related legal concepts.
Prepare a presentation regarding a legal topic of interest covered in the course.
Identify various methods of resolving a dispute before trial through the court system and through alternative dispute resolution.
